Researching Keywords – Step Two: Getting the First Page of Google

Category : keyword research

researching-keywordsResearching keywords can be an easy process, and it doesn’t have to be time consuming.  My methods for keyword research are fairly simple.  I like to start by brainstorming.  I will look at the product’s landing page for ideas.  Then I will search for the product’s name in Google.  I like to some of the phrases that come up and write them down on a Wordpad.

Google also has two really neat tools called the Wonder Wheel, and Related Searches that will give you ideas about keywords to use.  You can find this at the top left hand corner of the Google homepage under “Show Options” after you have performed a search.

From this I create a list of 12 keywords that appeal to me, and I pop them into the Google Keyword Tool to see how many searches they get per month.  I also check out the SEOBook Keyword tool just to compare.  I like keywords with some 50 – 100 or more searches per month, and little competition.

Finally, I take my list of 12 keywords, put each one in quotes, and Google them to see how many other pages mention them.  If the magic number is less than 10,000, I go for it.  When you are just starting out, you may want that number to be under 5,000.  It all really depends on how much work you want to put in to rank for that keyword.

One big word of advice is to think about some of your products uses, and how it will help a person.  So many times, internet marketers will go in using the same keywords as others, and before you know it the niche seems to get flooded with the same old content.   You will end up finding hundreds of the same types of articles targeting the same obvious keywords.  If you look for unique, relevant keywords that no one else is thinking about, you will attract an audience, and the search engines will rank your content higher because it is unique and different.

You can use the methods above for free. If you are like me, and get a little frustrated sometimes trying to find the right keywords, I recommend InstaCash Keywords.  This daily service will automatically send you pre- researched keywords.  Keywords are picked for you from an experienced internet marketer who makes six figures a year, Matt Davis, and Travis Sago, a seven-figure a year marketer.  It’s great if you really want to skip the keyword research part.  You can even test drive InstaCash Keywords for only $4.99.
